Our plans for
the Island involve the use of skilled and unskilled volunteers
where possible to attain our stated aims and objectives. We
need volunteers young and old, able-bodied or disabled for a
multitude of tasks large and small i.e. fundraising, clearing
and rebuilding paths, bird watching, tree planting, invasive
species removal,
volunteer warden and general
conservation work.
If you are interested in any of these
tasks
above and wish to join us in this project as a volunteer click
here to
download an application form to become a member or click
here
to email us. We are looking for volunteers to join us in a hands on
approach. Skilled or unskilled are welcome. New skills can be
learnt on this project.

We have already
started working on our Barge "Interpreter" which will be used as
a floating interpretive center moored at the Island.

In June 2004 a
tree fell on the O’Neill’s summerhouse on the Island and caused
considerable damage to the structure of the house. After
discussion with Lord O’Neill and the Natural and Built Heritage
Departments of the Environment and Heritage Service it was
decided to remove the tree from the house and the trees growing
out of and around the house by volunteer members. To facilitate
these operations members carried out temporary repairs to the
McGarry Jetty.

January 2005
In late January 2005 volunteers pollarded
a lime tree beside the round tower as the branches of the
tree were growing against the tower. (This was done after
taking advice from E.H.S. Built Heritage.) As the tower
is on top of a very steep bank it was decided not to remove
the tree as the roots of the tree are helping to stabilise
the steep bank. Through time we will pollard all the
trees along the bank as they are all quite tall and
susceptible to being blown over in strong winds. This has
happened in the past and the trees that have fallen have
taken the bank with them. The avenue of trees is around 200
years old and we would not like to loose any more of them.

Tower Out of Danger

This Beech Tree is dead and our next job is to remove it
as it is threatening the House and Tower. It was a branch from
this tree that fell on the house last summer. However the tree
cannot be removed until we have confirmation that there are no
bats hibernating in it. If you wish to volunteer for
any future events on the Island please
